Q: I just installed a programmer in my 2004 Ford Super Duty with a 6.0L Diesel. The instructions with my programmer recommended installing an Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge if using a power level above setting one. Is it necessary to have this installed?

A: Whenever you modify your engine it is always a good idea to monitor what the engine is doing. Most trucks come with a good gauge package from the factory that includes oil pressure, coolant temperature and battery charging. When you increase your diesel engine’s power, you are also increasing the amount of heat produced. Watching your Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) will give you an accurate and fast-reacting way to see if you are about to do any engine damage. Many of the programmers available even link to the EGT gauge and will automatically back down the power when a certain temperature is reached. If you are only using your first power setting you should be okay, but I would follow the recommendation of your programmer and add a gauge if you plan to use any of the higher settings.
