Q: I would like to install a flip kit on my truck but am not sure about cutting my frame. Mark – Tacoma, WA
A: Cutting your frame can be intimidating, but if you take your time and follow the instructions a person who can perform routine maintenance should have no problem installing a flip kit. The key is to be prepared with the right tools and have some help.
Although it is not necessary, I recommend removing your bed - this is where having some help comes in. By taking the bed off you gain access to the frame and have more room to work. Be sure to support your truck using jack stands placed on the frame in front of the leaf spring hangers. If you place the stands under the axle or the rear of the frame you will bend your frame when you make your cut. I also recommend making a wooden support that you can place under the rear of the frame to keep the frame from bending once the cut is made. This can be a simple piece of 2x4 cut to length and installed between the ground and frame.
You can cut the frame using a cut off wheel, sawzall or Plasma cutter. DO NOT USE A TORCH. It will heat the frame too much, which may cause cracks down the road. Cut and install one C-section at a time. This is done to prevent the possibility of twisting your frame. Be careful not to cut or drill through any brake or fuel lines that may run through your frame. Using these tips and following the instructions you should have no problem installing your flip kit.
