Q: I have a 1999 Dodge Durango and am planning to install a supercharger. Everything I read says that I am required to use premium fuel with my supercharged vehicle. Why is this?
A: In laymen’s terms, a supercharger crams lots of air into the cylinders of your engine. As a result, the pressures in the combustion chamber are extremely high. High octane fuel is more stable and burns slower than lower octane fuel. So if you have low octane fuel and extremely high pressures in the combustion chamber, you will have problems with detonation (fuel burning in the combustion chamber before it’s supposed to.) Basically, your truck will run better and have fewer problems if you use premium fuel when upgrading.
